Express toll lanes are toll lanes on highways designed to speed up traffic, allowing drivers to avoid congestion in exchange for a fee. Charging is done electronically through RFID devices, license plate recognition or mobile applications, without the need to stop. To regulate demand, these highways apply dynamic pricing, increasing tolls during peak hours.

Nologin, manages and operates the charging infrastructure for several highways in the U.S. These highways operated on a monolithic system, where each software had its own database in a local data center. This meant that, although traffic demand varied, infrastructure resources remained constant, creating inefficiencies.

To optimize resource management and adjust infrastructure costs to the real needs of the business, migration to the cloud was proposed under a microservices philosophy.
